Skid Detector

A hacker's nightlight.

Install firmware

A configurable RGB nightlight with passive Wi-Fi and BLE alerts. Pick your hardware before connecting.

Installation replaces the firmware currently on the board. Export any settings you want to retain. Chip detection prevents a mismatched chip family; it cannot verify wiring.

After installation

  1. Connect to the Wi-Fi network SkidDetector-xxxxxx.
  2. Use password 12345678.
  3. Open 192.168.4.1 to set the light, alert rules, and optional buzzer.

The device UI works offline. When your phone warns about no internet, choose to stay connected. Open the address with http:// if the setup page does not appear automatically. It starts with a slow color transition. Sustained deauth floods, Bluetooth pairing spam and strong Axon candidates alert by default. Trackers, Ring cameras and other device detections are opt-in; the buzzer starts disabled.

If connecting fails, close serial monitors. Hold BOOT, tap RESET, then release BOOT and reconnect.

Hardware & wiring

Seeed 6×10 RGB Matrix for XIAO: 60 WS2812 LEDs. XIAO profiles use D0 for matrix data and D1 for the optional buzzer.

ProfileMatrix DINBuzzerRadioVerification

Matrix power goes to 5 V and GND; all grounds must be shared. Use a suitable level shifter for reliable 3.3 V-to-5 V data signaling when wiring externally. A higher-current buzzer needs a transistor driver, not direct GPIO power.

The default LED budget is 500 mA, in addition to the ESP32's draw. Use a stable USB supply. Raise the budget only with an adequate external 5 V supply; do not back-feed the USB port.

Detection

Dragon Detector's current signatures cover Axon, Flipper, Pineapple, Flock, Meta, Pwnagotchi, Nyanbox, HaleHound, Biscuit, SmartTag, Find Hub, Tile, acoustic sensors, camera/ALPR vendors, Remote ID, and more.

Deauth alerts require three strong windows for the same access point within 30 seconds, with repeated targeting or broadcasts. BLE spam detection looks for sustained address churn or rapid pairing-identity changes behind one address. Ordinary disconnects and steady pairing advertisements do not meet those rules. All profiles use the same detection logic; S2 supports Wi-Fi only.

Names and addresses can be spoofed. These are candidates, not proof of identity, recording, tracking, or intent. No radio detector can guarantee zero false alarms.

Make it yours

22 nightlight modes, including plasma, aurora, fire, strobe, dim-and-brighten fades, chase and color tiles. Six palettes, ten presets, adjustable effect timing and brightness floor, strobe on-time, independent motion and color speeds, and an animated preview.

Defaults: ten red flashes for a deauth flood, ten blue flashes for a BLE pairing flood, then independent 30-second cooldowns. Axon police lights continue until 15 seconds pass without a qualifying sighting. Customize each alert’s colors, pattern, brightness, duration, cooldown, evidence threshold and optional buzzer. Import and export settings from the local UI.

Monitoring stays passive. The firmware does not transmit deauthentication or interference traffic. The local access point transmits normal Wi-Fi management traffic.

ESP32 drivers

If a board with a USB-to-serial bridge does not appear in the port picker, use the driver matching that bridge. Native USB XIAO boards normally use the operating system’s built-in driver.
